Television

I have never been much of a television watcher. When my boys were little, the television ran non-stop in our house, but what I know about it was mostly heard from another room. The boys and their dad favored sports programs on the weekends, and the kids would watch just about anything in the evenings. I much preferred to read a good book or listen to my stereo in another room altogether.

There were two times, however, that I would retreat to my bedroom to watch television. On Sunday nights and Thursday nights, I would get out the ironing board, put it in front of the TV, and turn to PBS. My shows were Masterpiece Theater and Mystery. Watching these really classy productions while doing my least favorite household task, made the work a lot more bearable. Probably my favorite Mystery series was Agatha Christie’s Tommy and Tuppance. The costumes were gorgeous. Other favorites were The Woman in White and Rebecca. I must like the period dramas best, because I also loved Upstairs, Downstairs and Pride and Prejudice, as well. I don’t think I ever saw a single program in either Mystery or Masterpiece Theater that I didn’t enjoy.

I guess I am out of the habit of watching TV these days, as I forget to turn on the set, and it stays silent unless my children or grandchildren are visiting. Sometimes, I’ll hear someone talk about a program that I think I would really enjoy, but in the end I forget about it, and end up doing something else instead.
